The origin of the title of the French Suites, composed during 1722-1725, is unclear. Such a title occurs neither in Bach's writings or in the earlier copies of the suites; yet Friedrich-Wilhelm Marpurg mentions it in 1762 as if it were commonly known. Forkel writes in his biography of Bach (1802) "One usually calls them French Suites because they are written in the French manner"; yet this criterion could just as well be applied to the so-called English Suites. Perhaps the name originated by analogy with the "English Suites" which (according to Forkel) were "composed for an aristocratic Englishman". Thus, after composing the English Suites, Bach may have wished to entitle his next collection of suites in a matching or complementary fashion, and so chose the name of the nation that had been preeminent in suite composition. In any case there was never an attempt in the earlier literature to trace the title of the French Suites back to any Frenchman's commission.
This volume contains the six French Suites in the form in which they were handed down in the Altnickol MS tradition and in their later embellished form (version B). It also includes two suites, in A minor and E-flat major, which are related in style to the French Suites. Each of these suites is presented in an earlier form (BWV 818 and 819) and a later form (BVW 818a and 819a). Finally our volume includes one alternative version each of the Third and Fourth French Suites (BWV 814a and 815a).

Delivery Times
We aim to dispatch every order within 24 hours excluding weekends.
However, we have learned from experience not to make promises regarding delivery. We aim simply to provide you with a reliable service at a reasonable cost. To keep our prices competitive we do not keep huge stocks of any particular item. No matter how good our stock control, there will occasionally be times when a particular item is not immediately available.
Sometimes this will be due to overwhelming demand, and sometimes it will be due to circumstances beyond our control, such as the item having gone to reprint or out of print. You should be aware that your payment is taken automatically online at the time you place your order. In the circumstances outlined above, we will do our best to contact you and inform you of any anticipated delays. You may cancel your order at any time if you are not happy to wait.
Although we make every effort to ship your order according to these guidelines, we will not be held responsible for any loss or damage caused by delayed delivery.

If our error has led to an item has been mistakenly supplied to you and it is unopened and in as-new condition, you may return it to us within twenty-one days and we will refund the cost of the item and pay the cost of returning the item to us.
If you have decided that you do not wish to keep an item that has been correctly supplied, you may return it to us unopened in as-new condition within fourteen days. In this case we will refund the cost of the item and you will be responsible for the cost of returning the item to us. You may not return items that we have ordered specially for you unless they are faulty or supplied in error.
