An organist's journey to Messiaen & Reubke begins with the first step, but how do you choose which tutor book to use? Some, like the Percy Buck book First Year at the Organ, assume a certain level of keyboard proficiency (maybe Grade 4 or 5 piano), whereas others, like David Sanger's Play the Organ, begin absolutely from scratch, so are ideal for an organ student with no previous keyboard experience.
