Organists! Take the high road this summer21 July 2020 | Forwoods ScoreStore An Organist's Scottish Collection National Melodies arranged by Antony Baldwin Banks Music Publications 14104 RRP £6.95 (our online price £6.60) Every organist has been there: a family request for the dear departed's favourite Scottish tune at the end of the funeral sends you scurrying to the bookcase and rifling through every volume in the expectant yet mistaken belief that 'I must have it in one of these'! Antony Baldwin has done us all a huge favour here, collecting in one place thirty of these traditional tunes in straightforward arrangements which, as he says, 'experienced colleagues should feel free to expand... through repetition, modulation, improvisation, "soloing out" and other means'. Most of these melodies are as old as the hills, but Highland Cathedral - written in 1982 - is a particularly welcome inclusion, embracing the atmosphere, folklore and legend of the highlands. This piece is also available separately here. It's lovely to have Kelvingrove in its 6/8 form, instead of the rather turgid 4/4 version we usually sing to 'Will you come and follow me?' along with Flower of Scotland, Auld Lang Syne, Skye Boat Song, Eriskay Love Lilt, Loch Lomond and many more. Banks Music Publications has truly been reinvigorated under the ownership of David and Rosemary Goodwin, who are developing a felicitous habit of publishing organ music that really works and is extraordinary value for money. This collection deserves to be in every organist's music case, and it's to be hoped that, before too long, it may be followed by An Organist's Welsh, Irish and English collections (though not necessarily in that order...)
